Discover the unique charm of these sector clocks, featuring an authentic distressed dial. Unlike other replica sector clocks, these models offer a superior build and distinct style. If you're looking for something beyond the typical wall clock, this piece is perfect. It makes an excellent conversation starter for an office, workshop, garage, reception area, and more. Our images show two original clocks from RAF sector rooms and a clock from World War II, which inspired this model.
Originally known as "colour change clocks," sector clocks were introduced by the RFC (Royal Flying Corps), the predecessor to the RAF, during World War I in 1917. They were used to track the movements of German planes and airships, evolving further during World War II. These clocks gained prominence during the Battle of Britain and remained in service on certain air force bases through the Cold War. Today, original sector clocks are highly prized, often selling for £5,000-£8,000 ($6,500-$10,500) at UK auctions.
During the war, several versions of sector clocks existed, each with slight face variations but retaining the iconic red, blue, and yellow triangles. The clocks were either electrical or mechanical. This MWC clock replicates the original electric version and includes a sweeping second hand for authenticity.
How Sector Clocks Were Used
The sector clock was essential in Ground-Controlled Interception (GCI) before modern airspace control systems existed. The clock face features red, yellow, and blue triangles in five-minute intervals, with both an outer 12-hour ring and an inner 24-hour dial.
When an aircraft was sighted, its position was recorded alongside the triangle color under the minute hand at the time. This data was then relayed to sector headquarters, where color-coded markers represented each air raid on a large map of the UK, overlaid with a British Modified Grid. As aircraft formations moved, these markers were adjusted with magnetic "rakes." This method enabled Fighter Controllers to track movement and predict possible targets quickly. The color coding also conveyed the age of the information, supporting rapid and effective response decisions.
